I don't want anyone to know, I am working on my Fitness Goal.
It was a Saturday afternoon and Anagha was talking to Siya (name changed), her Body Transformation customer on a Skype call, and like typical weekend noon, I was listening to Audibles. I overheard they were discussing some inch loss process and how she lost a few inches in the last few weeks.
Suddenly Aaryan who was in a Phonics session called Anagha for help. She told Siya that she will be back in a minute, and on her way to the bedroom told me to connect with Siya and she would be back quickly.
I gave her that look, as if what am I going to talk about, but then I had no choice. So I joined the call, greeted her, and was thinking ...MAI KYA BOLU?
So I asked her a typical question "so how is it going?" She replied with a smile, it's working well, I lost 2 inches off my waistline and also am able to sleep well. I participated in her happiness and congratulated her. Then I asked her immediately, with your positive change, are you able to motivate your friends to start exercising?
She abruptly said, No ways...I can't do it......then there was a major pause which both of us realized and then she came back saying I CAN'T TELL ANYONE THAT I AM PUTTING EFFORTS FOR MY FITNESS. She further added, once I get results, I will let the world know about it, but not when I am going through the Grind.
I was surprised and was about to discuss it further, but then Anagha came back and took over. But it kept me thinking.....WHY?
I started thinking about it and I even spoke to a few and could understand the top 3 reasons for people not sharing this:
- Few felt that "What if I Fail?"
- Few said "they themselves were not sure whether it will really work for them"
- Few said they like to keep things secret (Top secret kind of stuff, which you eventually end up telling everyone😎)
If I have to elaborate on the first 2 points (nothing can be done for #3), then it goes this way:
#1-The biggest fear of, what if I fail is not the actual failure, but the fact that people will laugh at me. I mean what will they think and talk about me. They would gossip about me: YEH ISKA HAMESHA KA HAI, 4-5 DIN KAREGA/GI AUR PHIR WAPAS WOHI, ISKA KUCH NAHI HO SAKTA.
#2- Sometimes (In fact many times) we set unrealistic expectations like I want Hritik jaisa 8 packs in the next 2 months. I am not saying this is not possible, but it's a difficult one to achieve and would need a focus and dedication like HR to make it possible and uske liye the first thing is WOH CANTEEN KA WADA PAV😋 KAM KARNA PADEGA, r u ready? then week me at least 4 din Workout💪 karna padega , can u find 30 mins for it? , Time pe sona padega (Kya hoga mere Netflix subscription ka?), and many more things to make it happen.
Here is my take on how can we manage this:
#1- Why bother what others think about u? This is your body and so it's your decision to improve it and its absolutely your decision to decide whether you have made a positive change. It's like those MA LIFE MA RULZ one-liners on Insta👽
If you are going to get distracted by what others say, you will never be able to achieve it. Go back and think about the days in your life (school/college time) when some neighborhood uncle made a loose statement: Yeh to PASS bhi nahi hoga, gaya kaam se....and now years later when you meet him showing your luxury car, how do you feel?
and also think about how they feel?
For that matter, you may realize they may not even recollect what they had said about you and here you are trying hard to show off 😁
If this has happened with you, then tell yourself Log To Aisa Hi Bolte Hai🙉, we should not get bothered by it and focus on what we want to do.
#2- We all know that Rome was not built in a day, similarly, HR did not achieve it overnight and in high probability, this will be true for you too. So ask your self what is your first priority, is it really losing weight in the next 1 month or is it feeling energetic? and if you think through you may even choose the Mas Tarde (Latter) option (thoda Spannish bol diya), so why cry if you don't lose weight?
I will have my next blog on "Think beyond Weighing scale", but for now: Set your goals in a way that will have an impact on your life in the long run and not something like a short term fantasy.
I was listening to a Finacial planner and he was explaining a difference between Investment and an Expense and I like what he said: Expense has quick gratification and Investment has long term gratification, so next time if you want to know whether investing in a particular asset class is a Real Investment or its just an expense, ask this question and you would know.
The same logic applies to Fitness, it doesn't have a quick gratification, you will see benefits only when you do it consistently. You need to allocate time to understand what you exactly looking at and your actions would be in line with it. I am not giving highlighting here that your GOALS should be SMART, am sure you would know this, but my suggestion is to keep them REAL.
Once you are through this exercise of setting your Fitness Goal, plan the HOW part, and stay aligned to it consistently (this can be another blog on how to plan your transformation). Some may see quick results and some will take time, but that is how it works as each individual is different. Here it really helps you to Get-Going, if you have not set any unrealistic Goals.
If you are sorted with Should we / or should we not tell, let's look at some benefits of Announcing your Fitness Goal:
I am sure you have heard this:
Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho … to poori kainath use tumsee milane ke koshish mein lag jaati hai”, so go ahead and do it Today. Write it on piece of paper and publish it to your people.
Secondly, when you announce, you kind of put more efforts to achieve it, as you know there would be people observing you and would not want to fail (not for you, but for them for sure😉)
Third, when you tell this to more people, you will be repeating the same statement multiple times: I am working on my fitness...I am working on my fitness......and when you do that, you prepare your mind to believe that you have achieved it and eventually you achieve it (Law of attraction works👐)
So Get up from that Sofa right now, Decide on a Real Fitness Goal, Announce to the World, and Work Consistently towards it.
And I am sure, you will make it, and when you do that, get back with your Experience, would love to hear it.
You can always get back to me to initiate your fitness journey. Anagha manages a kind of Transformation challenge which has helped a lot to achive their fitness holistically and not mere Weight loss and she would be happy to connect with you too.
